abstract

  • In this study we aim to document the local ecologic knowledge of fishing species recognized by fishermen in Palmira, Puebloviejo. We develop an extended peer review inventory which includes fishermen knowledge about fishes and the scientific reports of fish species relevant to this township. In this study we evaluate some existing problems in terms of degradation of the Cienega Grande de Santa Marta (CGSM) relying on the Wicked Problems concept, Post-normal Science and Extended Peer Review to identify alternative methodological tools. Here we consider the importance of transdisciplinary interpretations for degradation problems in the CGSM, taking together different and relevant knowledge about this area. We conducted interviews with fishermen from Palmira using structured interviews which were documented in writing and with an oral record; subsequently records were transcribed and stored. Furthermore, we visited Tasajeras market (Puebloviejo) to perform photographic records of fish species which are commercialised. Our study showed that Palmira fishermen identify 20 fishing species by their common name and, additionally, we reported 34 different species in Tasajeras market. Moreover, we documented different benefits that mangrove forest provides to fishes according to fishermen knowledge, as well as seasonal abundance in the CGSM. Finally, we developed an inventory composed by 9 information sheets of some selected species. Overall, our study concludes that the knowledge of the fishermen is remarkable and should be considered as relevant for the current problem of degradation in the CGSM.
