abstract

  • It has been documented that up to 90% of the waste generated in operating rooms is erroneously classified and disposed of as contaminated, generating unnecessary contamination of the environment, harming human health, and increasing costs for institutions. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact on the generation of contaminated solid waste in operating rooms after the implementation of an education strategy for the operating room staff of the Fundación Cardioinfantil in the year 2022. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled experimental study with analysis before and after the training session to compare the segregation of waste from operating rooms. A descriptive analysis of the segregated sanitary waste was carried out. Results: When comparing the weights of the residues before and after the intervention, statistically significant differences were found. The weight of contaminated waste increased 0.592 (p<0.05). The weight of ordinary waste decreased an average of 0.037 kg. The weight of recyclable waste increased 0.172 (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we found that education in medical waste management for operating room staff has generated an increase in waste classified as recyclable. This study suggests that it is possible to reduce the amount of waste generated in surgical procedures through specific interventions
