Educational institutions are to some extent, rigid or inflexible, in their management aspects, mainly because of the difficulties they face in responding to both: (i) challenges in their context; and (ii) measures and activities to follow national and international trends in medical practices . A review of the literature reveals that it is necessary to generate and adapt research regarding organizational structures in universities, particularly on the factors that lead to specific and appropriate organizational designs in medical schools . Based on this approach, this research aims to answer the following question: ¿What characterizes the organizational structures in medical schools in Colombia? To answer this question, we analyze the university organizational structures among that type of schools that lead the respective classifications. The fundamental purpose, through this comparative exercise, is to identify the main characteristics of the organizational structures among the medical schools in Colombia.
