abstract

  • Introduction: The risk of workers to the occurrence of accidents at work has been mitigated over the years and this thanks to the application of various safety and health measures at work, however, for companies it represents a problem. the absence of a worker, both in cost and productivity. The absences of its workers due to medical incapacities, whether of common or occupational origin, and the presenteeism that occurs on the part of some workers due to health situations that do not allow them to be in optimal conditions to carry out the contracted work or due to other factors that can be identify within the organizations such as the loss of time, is an issue that concerns not only employers but also the different actors of the general system of social security in health in Colombia, such as health providers EPS, Administrators of Occupational Risks ARL and AFP Pension Funds. Objective: To carry out a scope review of the literature that allows identifying the prevalence of presenteeism and labor absenteeism, costs for companies, as well as identifying management models in workers who show presenteeism and labor absenteeism. Materials and methods: A literature scoping review of available studies was conducted using MeSH terms. The databases used were: SciELO, Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar with the following parameters: any country of origin, available in full text, in English and Spanish, published between 2015 and 2022. A total of 22 articles were included. Results: 22 quantitative cross-sectional, longitudinal and qualitative studies were selected from which information on the prevalence of presenteeism and absenteeism was extracted. In the studies reviewed, it was found that a large part of the workers handle very high and high stress and have high levels of presenteeism, however, in terms of the personal perception of the participants, none perceive presenteeism due to work stress. The fear of losing one's job becomes a fundamental cause for continuing to go to work and as causes of absenteeism, viral illnesses, work stress and disgust for the activities that are given to the employee were reported, which in turn, causes lack of motivation for the development of these, generating that in many cases the worker ends up investing extra time that is not recognized economically. Conclusion: In Colombia, diseases or accidents of common origin are, to a greater extent, the cause of work absenteeism. Regarding the costs of absenteeism, problems related to health and the work environment for companies can exceed the worker's salary, in turn, the highest costs were due to loss of productivity as a result of absenteeism.
