abstract

  • This study identified the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in poultry from a company in Bogota, by applying the STANDARDIZE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS. ATS-DLD-78-A (FERRIS 1978) . A total of 113 workers commonly known as galponeros poultry sector, who are responsible for feeding and caring for the birds (chickens) as well as veterinarians. The overall prevalence of respiratory symptoms was 45.1% (n = 50), being the symptom of wheezing, the most prevalent manifestation representing 34.4% (n = 39). Significant association between the clinical presentation of wheezing and gender was found, with a higher prevalence in men than in women (22.8% vs. 5.4%, p = 0.008). In the respiratory symptom of cough is found associated with gender (p = 0.012), being the most affected (29.8% vs. 10.7%) males. The exposure time> 8 years is associated with respiratory symptoms of wheezing (p = 0.032). No significant relationships between smoking habits, age, race and education level were found. Being the high overall prevalence of respiratory symptoms is necessary to strengthen the use of appropriate personal protective elements to protect the respiratory tract and of great importance to include workers in epidemiological surveillance programs for the control of respiratory symptoms in a way that is conduct annual monitoring them including occupational entrance exams and papers as directed risk factor complementary examinations
