abstract

  • Through this research, I seek to analyze the possible socioeconomic impact caused by Venezuelan migration to Colombia. The approach was based on the labor market, fiscal spending, poverty and security of the country for the year 2019 because the year 2020 is an atypical year for our research. Initially, the historical, economic, political and social context of Venezuela was reflected through a timeline from 1960 until the arrival of President Nicolás Maduro, which allowed the root of the crisis that the neighboring country is going through to be studied in depth. This crisis resulted in a change of thinking of the migrants, leaving behind the hope of one day returning and continuing with their lives, transforming migration into immigration. Causing with it, that a large part of the Venezuelan population was located in Colombia, unleashing great economic and social shocks for the country. In 2019, Colombia obtained a total registry of 1,771,237 Venezuelan migrants, the majority of whom were irregular foreigners. The cities with the largest Venezuelan population were Bogotá and the department of Norte de Santander, hosting 327,635 and 183,215 respectively. Regarding the labor market, it was evidence that it was slightly affected; the unemployment rate decreased 0.8 percentage points, the employment rate decreased 2.7 percentage points and the global participation rate 2.4%, compared to 2018. On the other hand, fiscal spending showed a significant increase in 2019, where GDP increased 0.12%, positioning the health sector as the largest expenditure with 616,236 MM pesos. Likewise, extreme poverty increased by 2.4% and monetary poverty by 8.7%. On the other hand, security, statistically yields little relevant data to the hypothesis that Venezuelans increased common crime in Colombia; However, that is not the same perception of Colombian citizens, creating a xenophobic tendency towards migrants. Within this framework, it seeks to understand the sectors with the greatest impact and impact after the arrival of Venezuelan migrants in Colombia.
