Every procedure that has to do with the welfare of the family as a social institution in Colombia is regulated by the Colombian Family Welfare Institute. When a child or adolescent is separated from his or her biological parents, it is established as an obligation of the State to take responsibility to ensure that the kid could get the conditions for their good development. Thus the child is sent to temporary homes while their situation is resolved or their adoption process advances. The purpose of this project will be to understand how these institutions work, specifically the Asociación Nuevo Futuro in La Calera (municipality located near Bogota), in order to finally comprehend how children and adolescents make appropriations about its environment and specifically on three notions: family, gender, and violence.
