abstract

  • Introduction: Drivers of public passenger transport are continuously exposed to different risks and one of the most prevalent is cardiovascular risk, poor dietary habits, sedentary lifestyle and the stress associated with their work. Objective: To determine the cardiovascular risk and its relation with occupational factors in public transport drivers during the year 2015 in Bogotá. Methodology: Cross-sectional study taking secondary data from a database that includes 702 records of public service drivers in Bogotá, treated in an occupational health IPS. Demographic, occupational, pathological and toxicological variables and total cholesterol, HDL and blood pressure were included. We used IBM SPSS Statistics 24 for Windows to obtain measures of central tendency and dispersion and looked for possible associations between cardiovascular risk and sociodemographic and occupational factors using multivariate analysis. Results: The cardiovascular risk of the population was between moderate and high in 38.6% according to the Framigham model. We found a significant direct correlation between cardiovascular risk with age (r = 0.442, p <0.001), age at work (r = 0.426, p <0.001), total cholesterol (r = 0.440, p <0.001), Systolic blood pressure (r = 0.195, p <0.001), diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.114, p = 0.002) and body mass index (r = 0.140, p <0.001), and a significant inverse correlation With HDL cholesterol (r = -0.161, p <0.001). A statistically significant association was found between the cardiovascular risk measured by Framingham with a high BMI (p = 0.039), with a history of diabetes (OR = 4.031, 95% CI 2.48-6.57, p <0.001), (P = 0.035), alcohol consumption (p = 0.003), and cigarette smoking (OR = 2.49, 95% CI 1.68-3.70, p = 0.014). Conclusions: The cardiovascular risk of drivers is high and is associated with a history of diabetes, smoking, obesity and overweight, high blood pressure and seniority in the work, hence the importance of prioritizing health surveillance. This population and the promotion of healthy living habits.
