abstract

  • This research aims to analyze the process of internationalization of the armed conflict in Colombia, bearing in mind that for nearly fifty years it went unnoticed and was even indifferent, on both a domestic level and by the international system. Furthermore, the overall purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the consequences of the armed conflict in Colombia in regard to border security relations during the period of 2002-2006; from this, four main points are established. First, describing the process of internationalization of the conflict, by understanding that its effect on the area has developed from the concept of spillover. Second, establishing whether any difference exists on the incidence of conflict in the various border points and determining the reason for differing situations on the Venezuelan and Ecuadorian border points. For this purpose, the manifestations of conflict that have affected relations with Venezuela will be analyzed to establish their impact. In the same way, the events that have affected the Ecuadorian side will be examined. Third, it will seek to establish the ways in which the incidence of Colombian armed conflict is similar or different with respect to each border of study and determine the consequences on border security. Forth, to evaluate the possibility of an encounter by the three countries in order to seek a mutual benefit, implementing a collective security system or of shared interests that enable a joint fight for security at the borer points, which ultimately causes a distortion in relationships.
