abstract

  • Forgiveness has been a fundamental part of transition processes in countries that have experienced conflict and have achieved the resolution of it. Currently, Colombia is one of the nations undergoing this process, using mechanisms such as reconciliation, reparation and demobilization in order to attain this goal. From this framework, the interest of this study was to know what notions of forgiveness have presidents Alvaro Uribe and Juan Manuel Santos, as representatives of the State, transmitted during their presidentials periods,. To do so, a cualitative study was performed to analize some of their speeches, making a comparison with what psychological literature proposes about this concept. Qualitative discourse analysis reveals that presidents don’t talk explicitly about forgiveness, however they transmitted the concept through related notions such as reconciliation and reparation. such notions bring up the underlying implication that there needs to be a change of heart at the core of the concept of forgiveness and the importance of the State as a mediator between the victim and the aggressor.
