abstract

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to translate, adapt and evaluate the clinimetric properties of the POSAS scale when applied to patients with hypertrophic (HS) and keloid scars (KS) as sequelae of burns, that were treated with Z plasties in the Burn Patient Foundation at Bogotá (Colombia), during June of 2015 to April 2016. Methods: This study evaluates the clinimetric properties of a scale. The translation and cross-cultural adaptation was done according to the translation-back translation method. The translated and adapted instrument was applied to fifty-two (n=52) patients before and after they underwent a surgical procedure. Validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility of the scale were examined. Results: There were significant differences between the scores of the Observer and the Patient scales before and after the surgical procedure (p< 0. 000); except for the itching item in the Patient scale. POSAS scale demonstrated to have a high internal consistency for the Observer and the Patient scale (α= 0. 912 and 0. 765). It showed a high inter-rater reliability for the ordinal variables of the Observer scale (r> 0. 6). The inter-rater reliability for the categorical variables of the Patient scale was acceptable for pigmentation and relief items (κ> 0. 61). This tool was able to identify clinical changes over time, except for the itching item in the Patient scale (p= 0. 271). Conclusions: The POSAS scale demonstrated to be a valid, reliable and feasible tool to evaluate the quality of HS and KS as sequelae of burns.
