Objective To describe the lumbar musculoskeletal symptoms in operational and administrative workers of coal mining in the municipality of Samacá – Boyacá. Methodology Descriptive cross-sectional study with 82 workers between the operational area (64) and administrative area (18) of a mine in Samacá (Boyacá). The variables to be evaluated were sociodemographic, work-related, and clinical, and the Kuorinka Nordic questionnaire was used. In the statistical analysis, measures of central tendency and dispersion were obtained and associations between the different variables were sought. Result It was found that discomfort in the lumbar region occurred in 33 workers, of which 18 (54.5%) were female and 15 (45.5%) were male. 78.8% (26) of the workers with discomfort in the lumbar region were from the area. operational and administrative area 21.2% (7). The majority of workers who reported symptoms in the lumbar region were from the operational area who carry out underground coal extraction and this process has multiple tasks such as drilling, blasting, cutting, chipping, loading and transportation. Of the workers in the operational area who belong to the exploitation and advancement front of the tunnel, the job that presented the most lumbar discomfort was the chopper who works removing the rock. Conclusions Skeletal muscle disorders with lumbar symptoms are very common in mining work, in most cases their duration can be short, sometimes they do not receive adequate treatment, increasing work absenteeism due to disability, but without requiring a change in the activity they perform.
