abstract

  • Meningiomas are the most common tumors of the central nervous system and also represent the most common benign intracranial pathology (2,4). Despite their importance, epidemiological knowledge of them remains insignificant compared to other less prevalent tumors such as brain gliomas; however, there is a growing global interest in investigating this important clinical entity (1). Such advances have had a greater impact in the United States and Europe, but in Latin America there is only one Mexican study that deals specifically with describing their histological characteristics (12). We present a series of cases of 176 patients operated on for meningiomas at the Hospital Universitario Mayor Mederi in Bogotá, Colombia and describe their main epidemiological, histological and clinical variables with the main objective of describing such characteristics in our population and evaluating possible variations with respect to international literature. The mean age of the patients was 56.3 years of which the majority were women (1.75: 1), the most common tumor location was the cranial convexity (61%) followed by the skull base (37%). Most of the tumors (84%) were classified as WHO I, 16% were WHO II, and there were no WHO III meningiomas. 16% of the patients relapsed, 8% had postoperative complications, and 6.8% had to be reintervention. The present study represents the largest Latin American series specifically with meningiomas, however it is imperative to continue research in this oncological field
