A review of different papers and empirical research on the concept of gender and gender identity and the conceptualization of transgenderism as a phenomenon was sought, aiming at an approximation of the factors that intervene in the process of socialization and psychosocial development of transgender people. Constant discrimination, stigmatization and social segregation make transgender people vulnerable to levels of anxiety, depression and other types of risks associated with drug use, self-harm and suicide attempts, among others. The main purpose of this review is to provide a contextual framework, emphasizing depression and family support.
