abstract

  • This article presents a figurative approach to the career of the Colombian pianist, arranger and composer Edy Martínez, based on an analysis that seeks to relate the social structures and individual circumstances present in each period of his career, in order to determine the main elements that constitute his musical aesthetic. Using the processual conceptualization of Norbert Elias, and the individual case study as a methodological resource, the document articulates the processes of socialization and individuation of the musician through the category of habitus, and examines the main figurations within which he was immersed. After three decades working abroad alongside the great figures of Latin music and jazz, his artistic identity has fully opted for Latin jazz. In 1993, he returned to the country and produced his debut as a soloist, the album Privilegio (1995), which marked a milestone in the history of Colombian jazz.
