abstract

  • This research was carried out to analyze the role of the elderly in the news agenda of three Colombian media outlets both at national and regional level. This was done through a quantitative analysis where the rate of appearance of older adults in the news published by the media in question was sought, additionally, these appearances were analyzed under a qualitative lens where the words, context and tone with which the subjects in question were spoken of within the news item were taken into account. The analysis of Cambio, El Colombiano and El Tiempo showed a rate of textual appearances of 1.8% in the total of the news published by these media. Now, the results of this study should be taken as an individual exercise and not a general representation of older adults in national media because the impact of the elderly goes beyond textual appearances, the existence of problems and dynamics in Colombian society that especially affect the elderly remain in the pages of the Colombian press and in the minds of the editors when deciding on the news to be published.
