abstract

  • In this paper I analyze the ways in which the Escuela Libre Textil is configured to produce social change through its enunciation, activities, platform, and interactions with the public. In this way, I argue that it is an expression of social activism, as it is configured as a community for social transformation through its link with the textile trades, the narration of its experiences and with it, the construction of networks among those who make it up. Through a digital ethnography I address the different mechanisms that allow the School to generate dynamics for self-training and public and free research of textile trades, mainly in the social network Instagram. On the one hand, because it exposes the emotional, material and interactive work that involves these tasks as crafts, to motivate its economic, historical and symbolic valuation. Also, because it appropriates the creative capacity of textile crafts, means and agents for social transformation; in a way that summons people interested in inspiring and letting themselves be inspired by individual and collective social demands and the construction of other possible worlds. Through discussions, the participants of the School weave in the talks a wide variety of proposals that they replicate in their social and geographical contexts. Thus, the political expression of textile art in the pedagogical sphere is manifested insofar as it puts into tension diverse social phenomena, ranging from the problematization of access to knowledge about textile crafts to the gender conflicts they encompass.
