Maras or gangs have been one of the principal actors in the context of violence in the Guatemalan State. The social and economic costs of violence provided by gangs and criminal organizations has positioned Guatemala as one of the most violent countries in the world, do to its high levels of criminality and homicide rates. The International Community, through various organizations such as the United States Agency for International Development, have provided cooperation in violence prevention to the State of Guatemala by means of programs that pretend a direct impact upon society to achieve violence prevention. This study case pretends to analyze the accomplishments and limitations of those initiatives which pretend to position integral strategies to controvert de problematic.
