abstract

  • Introduction: Thyroid disorders have been related to alterations in different cardiovascular risk factors and in turn to an increased risk of significant cardiovascular outcomes. Objective of the study: establish the association between the alteration of thyroid hormones (TSH - T4T) and modifications in different cardiovascular risk factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the population attending the executive check-up program during 2019. Of 3917 individuals between 35 and 75 years old, 925 participants were selected through simple random sampling. The characteristics of the population were described, an association was sought between risk factors according to thyroid status, linear correlation between thyroid hormones, and cardiovascular risk factors. Linear and logistic regression between thyroid hormones and diagnosis of thyroid disorder with cardiovascular risk factors. Results: 4.9% presented subclinical hypothyroidism, 1.19% subclinical hyperthyroidism, and 0.22% manifest hyperthyroidism. Cardiovascular risk was higher in subclinical hypothyroid compared with euthyroid (19.5% vs 3% p = <0.001). In the linear regression, statistical significance was found between TSH and triglycerides (p = <0.001, R2 = 0.0127). Binomial logistic regression found an association between the diagnosis of subclinical hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome (OR 2.71 CI 1.32 - 5.53). Conclusion: In the present study, subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with alterations in the lipid profile, increased cardiovascular risk, and a greater possibility of diagnosing metabolic syndrome.
