abstract

  • This article addresses the practices of discrimination against women journalists in the central television news programs of RCN and Caracol concerning binary gender roles. A content analysis was carried out between February 6 and April 28, 2021, which took into account a total of 42 broadcasts and 1340 recorded notes. In this analysis, the participation of women at different levels of hierarchy in the newscasts was observed, as well as the topics assigned and the representation of women based on the selection of sources, taking into account variables such as news registration identifiers, identifiers related to audiovisual elements and identifiers related to the assignment of topics. Likewise, a review was made of data on undergraduate graduates in communication, social, journalism, and related fields between 2014 and 2020 in the consolidated databases of the National Higher Education Information System (SNIES) in order to compare this figure against the participation of women in newscasts. Low participation of women in newscasts was evidenced both in reporting positions as well as in managerial positions or content decision-making positions. On the other hand, news presentation was one of the few instances in which women dominated. Regarding the assignment of topics, men were more involved in hard news related to judicial, economic, sports, and drug trafficking issues, compared to women, who were more involved in soft news related to entertainment, science and technology, and health. It was also evident that there is a preference for expert and male sources in producing the articles. Based on these findings and the data obtained from the SNIES databases, the low participation of women in newscasts is evidenced in comparison with the high number of graduates in journalism careers, which shows that there are gender gaps for women in these newscasts.
