abstract

  • Tensions that led to the Colombo-Peruvian conflict began in September 1932, when citizens of Peruvian nationality stormed the port of Leticia, in the Colombian Amazon. Faced with this threat and given the inability to reach a solution through diplomatic channels, both governments responded with a military and diplomatic declaration, arguing that the other side violated sovereignty and previous treaties. Considering the great relevance of the press to promote nationalism on both sides, this thesis examines the impact of this conflict in terms of the creation of nationalist discourses, both in Peru and in Colombia based on a comparative analysis. In this sense, it seeks to address the impacts of the press on the construction of nationalist images while posing negative stereotypes of that emerging other as a clear threat to the sovereign interests of the nation and the reinforcement of national identity.
