La provincia biogeográfica de páramo andino presenta la flora de alta montaña tropical más diversa del mundo. La reciente evolución del páramo, con el último levantamiento de los Andes septentrionales al fin del Terciario y dinámica de glaciaciones en el Cuaternario, el cual promovió una alta tasa de diversificación florística, lo convirtió en el hotspot de biodiversidad más joven y frío globalmente. En este capítulo se mencionan las familias de plantas que dominan el páramo, además de los patrones de riqueza florística con respecto a la latitud y altitud, y la presencia de centros de endemismos. Adicionalmente, presentamos una clasificación que divide los páramos en 13 unidades fitogeográficas naturales a lo largo de la provincia biogeográfica, y que están correlacionadas con gradientes geográficos y climáticos. Por su ecología y flora, se definen los grandes tipos de vegetación del páramo, tanto zonales como azonales, en las franjas altitudinales de sub-páramo, mid-páramo y super-páramo. Finalmente, se resumen las principales amenazas ambientales a la fitodiversidad y se recalcan las perspectivas de estudio de interés sobre flora y vegetación del páramo andino
The biogeographic province of Andean Páramo presents the most diverse tropical high mountain flora in the world. The recent evolution of the paramo, with the last uplift of the northern Andes at the end of the Tertiary and glaciation dynamics in the Quaternary, which promoted a high rate of floristic diversification, made it the youngest and coldest biodiversity hotspot globally. This chapter mentions the plant families that dominate the moor, in addition to the patterns of floristic richness with respect to latitude and altitude, and the presence of centers of endemism. Additionally, we present a classification that divides the paramos into 13 natural phytogeographic units throughout the biogeographic province, and that are correlated with geographic and climatic gradients. Due to its ecology and flora, the major types of vegetation of the paramo are defined, both zonal and azonal, in the altitudinal bands of sub-paramo, mid-paramo and super-paramo. Finally, the main environmental threats to phytodiversity are summarized and the perspectives of interesting studies on flora and vegetation of the Andean paramo are highlighted.
