The project follows a dispersed and varied group of intellectuals who, on both sides of the Atlantic and throughout the 19th century, imagined the American continent in different ways and for different purposes; the project begins with the first debates around the representation of the continent after independence, continues with the emergence of the "Latin" character of America, in the middle of the century in Paris, and ends with the disputes between the nomination of America as Hispanic or Latin in the United States.
