Coco es una película de Disney Pixar del año 2017 inspirada en la tradicional fiesta mexicana del Día de los Muertos. La cinta gira alrededor de la aventura que emprende Miguel en busca de sus ancestros guiado por su amor por la música. Durante su travesía descubre que, debido a las fallas de memoria que presenta su bisabuela, Coco, el padre de ella será olvidado para siempre. A su regreso, Miguel interpreta para ella la canción Recuérdame, lo que provoca una sorprendente y transitoria mejoría de la protagonista. En este artículo los autores llaman la atención sobre el efecto de la música en la memoria de mamá Coco, y desde el punto de vista neuropsiquiátrico se plantea la inquietud en torno al diagnóstico que podría tener dicho personaje a la luz de la quinta edición del Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Se revisa el concepto del poder de la música propuesto por Oliver Sacks hace quince años y la evidencia actual acerca de la influencia de dicho arte en pacientes con demencia.
Coco is a 2017 Disney Pixar film inspired by the traditional Mexican holiday of Day of the Dead. The film revolves around the adventure that Miguel undertakes in search of his ancestors guided by his love for music. During his journey he discovers that, due to his great-grandmother Coco's failing memory, her father will be forgotten forever. Upon his return, Miguel performs the song Recuérdame for her, which causes a surprising and temporary improvement in the protagonist. In this article, the authors draw attention to the effect of music on Mama Coco's memory, and from a neuropsychiatric point of view, they raise the concern about the diagnosis that this character could have in the light of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The concept of the power of music proposed by Oliver Sacks fifteen years ago and the current evidence about the influence of such art in patients with dementia are reviewed.
