abstract

  • Introduction: People’s lifestyles are becoming more sedentary, which implies a new risk factor for human health. Objective: The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence of sedentary behavior and the association with the Burnout Syndrome in school teachers from Unión de Colegios Bilingües (UCB) —Bilingual Schools Union— of Bogota, Colombia. Materials and Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study in a group of 402 teachers from five schools, members of the UBC. A sample with a 95 % reliability, a margin of sampling error of 7 % and a reference ratio of 50 % was initially selected, considering 131 teachers. With them, it was conducted a non-probability sample of convenience. The project had the support of the Ethics Committee of Universidad del Rosario. The time of sedentary behaviors was stablished using the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) and the level of burnout was measured with the Maslash Burnout Inventory (BMI- ES) questionnaire. Results: Women (60,3 %) and men (39, 7%) aged 22 to 55 participated in the study. High and medium levels were recorded on emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low self-fulfillment scales. The time of sedentary behaviors was noted in 70,2 % of the teachers, who remain seated 8 hours or more per day. Physical inactivity and burnout in women reported values p<0,05. Conclusions: It was observed that physical inactivity may be a risk factor for burnout in women, and it is linked to the school section where they teach.
