abstract

  • Several studies suggest that in situations characterized by institutional conflict or times of great change (Byman & Pollack, 2011), it is worthwhile to study legitimizing ideologies of the status quo, such as the Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) or the Right – Wing Authoritarianism (RWA), since both ideologies imply beliefs about morality, social order, and power (Nelson & Milburn, 1999), and they both affect deliberation and political participation (Rottenbacher & Cordova, 2014). This research aimed to examine the relationships between two legitimazing theories of the Status Quo (RWA and SDO), social identification with socially relevant categories in relation to the armed conflict (civil society or minority society) and negative attitudes towards FARC ex-combatants. To carry out this study, we performed correlation and linear regression analysis. Finding suggest that both, groups identified with the categories civil society and minority society, endorse prejudice towards FARC ex-combatants, however, the predictor of prejudice for each group is different. For the minority group the most predictive variable was RWA whereas for the civil society it was SDO. Therefore, negative attitudes toward ex-combatants are related to perceived threat to either the social order or the social status. The implications of these findings are discussed.
