Ports are important for a country’s growth, since their contribution transcend the economic benefits that result from their operation. This work explains the perception that the inhabitants of Barranquilla have about the connection between the growth and development of the port and the social and economic dynamism of the city. To do this, semi-structured interviews were carried out with fifteen inhabitants of the city. The analysis showed a positive and direct relationship between the port and the city, that is, the inhabitants consider that if the port of Barranquilla evidences positive growth rates, it will influence the development and growth of the city in the same way.
