Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, used not only for the management of opioid overdose, but also for the treatment of alcohol dependence. In studies with patients with depression and alcohol dependence, it has been suggested that naltrexone could have an antidepressant effect. Objectives : Determine if there is enough evidence to argue that naltrexone has an antidepressant effect, by giving it as an adjunctive management in patients with alcohol dependence and major depressive disorder. Methodology : A systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis was performed to determine the antidepressant effect of naltrexone as an adjunctive management with SSRIs in patients with alcohol use disorder and depression. Results : Two articles were found that met the selected criteria, against which the evidence was not statistically significant for the reduction of depressive symptoms for the management of patients with depressive disorder and alcohol use disorder in SSRI management and adjuvant management with Naltrexone.
