abstract

  • This work seeks to make a historical construction and a reflection on the land conflicts on the Monserrate hill in Bogota. The hill is the tourist place par excellence of the city, however, behind the fame that precedes it there is a history of conflict in which merchants, the church and various state institutions seek to defend their interests on it. From the stories and fieldwork this text tries to reconstruct part of the history of the merchants of the upper part of the hill, its rise and its consolidation while a conflict develops with the church, owner of the land on which they work while it generates a kind of obligations and rules on the merchants. (1940-2010) From the apparently arbitrary decision of a state entity, the panorama about who can manage the land changes radically. From this point on, the inhabitants of the hill develop different defense repertoires to avoid leaving the hill because this decision to make a forest reserve effective without prior consultation or consent puts the inhabitants of the hill in a situation of illegality.
