abstract

  • This research concentrates on the two periods of presidential transition in Mexico (2000 – 2012), which ended the PRI´s hegemony that had prevailed since its foundation in 1929. From that moment, an unequal political landscape was formed, to exclusively benefit the PRI. Such was the repeated success of the model, Mexico was considered a failed democracy. However since the 1980´s, political and electoral reforms raised by rejuvenated minority parties set the course towards the presidential transition. Thus, this article investigates the PRI´s political position during the transitional period (2000 – 2012) determining if the political party had a structural reform with the purpose of keeping active in the dispute for the mexican political control. It will explore internal restructuring, and will explain the most important points of this change, finally showing an example of partisan transformation in order to take back control over the presidency.
