abstract

  • The José Celestino Mutis Experimental Station (JCM) at the University of Rosario, positioned between La Vega and Sasaima municipalities in Colombia, serves as a pivotal research and development hub. It focuses on the study and analysis of flora and fauna within one of the nation's most biodiverse regions. Spanning approximately 13 hectares, the station is a recuperating forest area that houses a scientific laboratory, a training facility, and cabins for student and researcher accommodation. Presently, the JCM Experimental Station is integrated into the National Interconnected System (SIN) for its electricity supply and relies on a diesel generator for backup during grid outages. This project's objective is to devise a grid-connected self-consumption microgrid that leverages the local solar resource and evaluates the hydrological potential of Quebrada Cambular, traversing the station's site, to optimize the utilization of natural resources for institutional benefit. This initiative aims at contributing to climate change mitigation and fostering energy sustainability. The project's methodology unfolds in four phases: compiling pertinent project information, characterizing the natural resources within the influence area, analyzing the energy requirements of the JCM Experimental Station, and simulating the microgrid using PVsyst. This approach integrates resource data, electricity consumption figures, and cost details related to microgrid components to evaluate the project's viability from technical, economic, and environmental standpoints. The findings will highlight potential enhancements in energy efficiency, self-sufficiency, reliability, and environmental impact regarding the electrical supply at the JCM Experimental Station.
