The literature suggests that acute pain management during the perioperative period would decrease the incidence of phantom limb pain in people undergoing amputation. The extent of the surrounding literature is not known, so a systematic review of the literature, an exposure review type, was carried out. The objective was to explore the literature around the association between the presentation of phantom limb pain in patients undergoing limb amputation and to describe the analgesic and anesthetic techniques used in the perioperative period. A search was carried out in the databases of MEDLINE (via PubMed), SCOPUS, EMBASE, COCHRANE, LILACS and Google Scholar to retrieve gray literature. The construction of the search strategy, the screening and the data extraction were carried out in duplicate and independently by MM and EC. They were included among randomized experiments, prospective and retrospective studies. Patients undergoing spinal anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, and peripheral limb block had lower scores on pain scales in the first postoperative hours; however, these benefits were indifferent between anesthetic techniques after 12 months of follow-up. Additionally, no differences were found between the anesthetic technique used and the incidence of phantom limb pain. The existing evidence around the association between anesthetic technique and phantom limb is scarce. Multiple analgesic and anesthetic interventions were found, each included study presented a different technique which makes it impossible to answer a specific clinical question about a specific intervention.
