abstract

  • Background: During the prenatal and perinatal care process, the pregnant women must face the health system and its structure, it implies that they must deal with protocols, attention’s routes, medical doctors and rejection or denial of their rights by healthcare providers ending in multiple forms of abuse and mistreat to obstetric population. This study aims to identify concepts about related to humanization-dehumanization of patients and healthcare providers at Ob-Gyn service at Hospital Universitario Mayor–Méderi. Methods: A qualitative, exploratory descriptive study was carried out, including 17 semi-structured interviews where the experiences of 6 patients, 5 residents of Gynecology and Obstetrics and 6 Ob-gyn specialists were recorded; issues related to humanization-dehumanization were covered in order to identify social representations in the Ob-gyn service. Results: The definition of dehumanization in which the patients emphasized the most, was depersonalization followed by poor communication, while among health staff the imposition of behaviors and again poor communication were highlighted. Regarding the Importance given among the interviewees to non-respectful treatment, was oriented towards the empathy. When comparing the relevance of each issue, it was found that the infrastructure has an important coverage in dehumanization. Conclusions: Although the representations of dehumanization are usually broad and diverse, both the health personnel and the patients showed a high tendency to relate the lack of empathy and the imposition of behaviors. This leads us to challenge ourselves to improve the conditions in which we provide a health service.
