abstract

  • Background. Gastric cancer is still a frequent cancer worldwide. Colombia is one of the countries with major incidence. It is the third leading cause of cancer death, and it still represents a health issue globally. Adenocarcinoma represents more than 90% of all gastric tumors and its prognose is related to the stage by the time it's diagnosed; in most cases it is an advanced stage and patient survival depends mainly on histologic type and initial TNM classification, as well as in the surgical option that guarantees negativity of margins and a lymph node resection count greater than 15. Methods. Observational descriptive retrospective study of patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent gastrectomy during the described period, with a follow-up from 2 to 5 years. Results. The Kaplan-Meier curve for overall survival in gastric adenocarcinoma was performed with 91.5% at 10 months, 87.2% at 20 months, 84.5% at 30 months and 80.9% at 40 months. Significant differences were found in the overall survival of patients when analyzing them from receipt or no adjuvancy (p=0.000), but no differences were found when analyzing the survival with variables of Interests such as dissected lymph nodes in the group of twenty lymph nodes or less versus more than twenty lymph nodes (p=0.06) or the clinical stage (p=0.52). Conclusions. No significant differences were found in survival when comparing the patients according to the number of dissected lymph nodes or the type of lymphadenectomy performed, however, significant differences were found in the overall survival of patients who received surgical management and adjuvancy.
