abstract

  • Breast cancer has been a central topic of diverse studies in different areas. This study in particular, wants to study the meaning of life and death in a group of women, after the diagnosis of breast cancer, by using the Moscovici's theory of social representations as the framework. To achieve this, a qualitative study was performed in which several in depth interviews were analyzed in order to identify, among the stories of the participants, common categories referring to their thoughts and evaluations about the sense of life and death. Points of convergence were found in topics such as the support received, the different treatments for cancer and its effects, the difficulties of the disease and the internal and external motives to go on with their lives. Finally, it was possible to find the strong association between death and cancer as a disease, and life as a synonymous of fight and also as the opportunity to leave a legacy as mothers, wives and as women.
