abstract

  • The purpose of this article is to present the findings of a study that examines the relationship between transformational leadership and Work engagement in public sector workers in Colombia. Methodology. Transformational leadership and work engagement were measured in a quantitative study based on a sample of 325 public workers in Colombia, with a slightly higher participation of women (52.6%), aged between 18 and 39 years (74.8%) and less seniority to 5 years (91.7%). The level of reliability of the questionnaire is adequate, with Cronbach's alphas greater than 0.70. The data were analyzed with descriptive and correlational techniques with the SPSS program. Results. The results reveal that transformational leadership is positively related to work engagement. The dimensions of inspirational communication, intellectual stimulation, support and personal recognition of transformational leadership presented positive and moderate correlations with the dimensions of vigor, dedication and absorption of work engagement; values between 0.44 and 0.64. Likewise, the dimensions of each of the constructs showed positive and high correlations with each other; values between 0.59 and 0.85 in transformational leadership and between 0.82 and 0.92 for Work engagement. Practical implications. The results of this study provide advances in the literature of transformational leadership and its relationship with work engagement in the context of public administration. This study verifies the importance of public leaders and their impact on psychosocial results in employees, an input that favors the design of management practices in the areas of human talent or human management in public entities in the country. Original value. This study explores the relationship between transformational leadership and work engagement in public sector workers, which has been scarcely studied in the Colombian public context.
