abstract

  • This work is based on a ethnographic investigation carried out in a private golf club in the city of Bogotá, accompanying a group of young people from popular classes who work as caddies. This profession has been the object of diverse interpretations. Some believe that, despite its uniqueness, it is a job like any other: another example of deregulated service work for young people with little experience and limited resources. Others insist, on the contrary, that it is a job that allows an upward social mobility due the affect, relationships and alliences formed beetween the popular youth and the privileged classes. My intention here is to explore this tension and expose how the popular youth its adapting, competing, making social, affective and violent relationships while working in the deregulated work conditions of Bogotá, Colombia and Latin America
