abstract

  • Pregabalin and gabapentin are part of the first line of neuropathic pain management. In the last 10 years, they have become high prescription drugs worldwide. Adverse events, and potential abuse have been described. We sought to describe the prescription profiles of gabapentinoids in patients assigned to the general health system in 3 Colombian health promoting entities, in the period between January 2016 and December 2018. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study, in patients enrolled in 3 health promoting entities during 2016 to 2018. All assigned patients, with prescription of pregabalin and gabapentin that were registered in the databases of Audifarma S.A. were included. The prescription profiles, population, minimum and maximum doses used, as well as associated morbidities, were described by proportions and graphs. Secondary information from Audifarma databases will be used. Results: there was an increase in the use of gabapentinoids, 95% off label; high prescription of pregabalin in pediatric patients. 28% of prescriptions had risk interactions in category C of Wolters Kluwer. prescribing doctors a large percentage are general practitioners. Discussion: In comparison with the literature in our country there are no prescriptions that suggest abuse or improper management of the prescription of gabapentinoids. A chronic use of gabapentinoids was found, studies are lacking to determine if they are related to cognitive impairment to establish prescription policies regarding time of use.
