abstract

  • Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women around the world and in Colombia. This article describes the time trends in breast cancer mortality in Bogota and Colombia between 1995 and 2009.Methodology: A Descriptive analysis of time trends in mortality rates using the statistical model of Age - period – cohort was made. Mortality information was provided by National Department of Statistics between 1995 and 2009. Period, period-drift (linear change in time), period-age, period-cohort and period-age-cohort models were assessed by the estimable functions method. Results: The death rate from breast cancer in Colombia was 6.78 per 100.000 with constant behavior in the three periods. While in Bogota was 7.78 per 100.000 with a tendency to decrease between 40 and 69, in the last period. In this study the effect period + cohort is the one that best describes the behavior of mortality rates from breast cancer in both scenarios (Bogota AIC: 13.8 p = 0.314; Colombia: AIC = 27.4 p = 0.238).Discussion: There is a downward trend in mortality from breast cancer in certain age groups in Bogotá in 2005-2009, various hypotheses could explain this phenomenon, among them access to screening methods, although no studies. It recommends strengthening the methods of screening and early diagnosis in the rest of the country.
