“Este trabajo a uno siempre lo carga”: un análisis sobre la configuración del estigma hacia los médicos que realizan interrupciones voluntarias del embarazo en Bogotá

This thesis explores the experiences of doctors who perform voluntary interruptions of pregnancy (IVE) in Bogotá. With the partial decriminalization of abortion in Colombia in 2006, doctors have to grapple with a confusing array of laws, policies, and regulations to provide IVE. At government level, officials promote and claim to hold values and norms that include actions and speeches that contain medical and judicial misinformation; which create, maintain, and perpetuate the stigma against abortion and the people related to the practice. At an institutional level, public and private entities try to provide the best service possible to women seeking access to IVE. Yet to achieve this, institutions and doctors have to deal with a lack of resources and the pressure to keep the service hidden. Additionally, on a personal level, physicians deal with judgment and are stigmatized for being willing to perform abortions. These stigmas cut across multiple social inequalities and profoundly affect the way physicians interact with their social circles. Throughout the text, I answer the question: how is stigma configured towards doctors who carry out voluntary interruptions of pregnancy in Bogotá? For this, the monograph is divided into six parts: introduction, three chapters, conclusions and corollary. The text begins with an introduction where I contextualize the partial decriminalization of IVE in Colombia; the implementation and the access barriers it has had. I end with a brief state of the art on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of doctors in relation to abortion.
