The research project in which this paper is grounded describes the strategic actions undertaken by the Business Group of Antioquia (the GEA Group) within the context of an armed conflict from 1978 to 2012. For these purposes, three concepts were theoretically examined: strategic responses based on the organization–environment relation, the definition of business conglomerates, and the characteristics of the conglomerate studied (the GEA Group). As part of a qualitative analysis, a literature review of socio-political events (armed conflict) in Colombia was conducted, identifyingthe strategies developed by the GEA Group for this environment. The study proposes an assessment matrix of the strategic responses from the business group against the armed conflict environment. Based on this analysis, the GEA Group exerted a large influence in the political sphere, being able to act as a conglomerate and impacting other areas of Colombian society.
