abstract

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to the healthcare system worldwide. In this context, nursing assistants and professionals have been the backbone of the medical response, facing extremely demanding and often overwhelming working conditions. Understanding their perceptions and experiences is essential not only to recognize their commendable work, but also to identify areas for improvement in managing future health crises. A qualitative phenomenological approach presents itself as an appropriate tool to capture the richness and depth of these unique work experiences. The pandemic has introduced unique challenges to the nursing field, from lack of personal protective equipment to concern for the health of self and loved ones. The phenomenological study allows us to explore how these conditions have influenced the meaning and significance of work for the participants, revealing dimensions beyond the quantitative data. Introducing the gender perspective in the approach to the problems of working conditions in the health areas requires considering the differences in the relationships between women and men, which determine different values and behaviors, inequalities in power and access to resources and opportunities, as well as the deep and historical sexual division of labor. Therefore, this work seeks to understand and analyze these topics within the different interactions and working conditions in the nursing area in Bogota, Colombia.
