abstract

  • The study of mental illness has been closely and jealously linked to psychiatry and psychology despite the recognition of the social component in the configuration and, therefore, alteration of the psych. The bets in Colombian and international public policy have integrated the sociological contributions in the prevention and treatment of mental illness, however, their focus turned towards the epidemiology of social psychiatry or psychotherapeutic assistance, where the social refers only to the Historical and socio-structural determinants of mental deterioration. Thus, as a research proposal, the approach of philosophical pragmatism represented by the school of symbolic interactionism is brought up, emphasizing the notion of social order and, consequently, social deviation. The foregoing in order to expose sociological contributions such as stigma and its impact on the socio-individual spectrum of mental health, formulating along the way, not only a synthesis of the various interdisciplinary investigations, but also a modest base from which to address new questions and guide more contributions of sociology to the area of health.
