The economic literature affirms that voters incorporate the policy decisions of their rulers when making electoral decisions. Using the trade agreement between Colombia and the United States as a case study, this document tests this hypothesis. Using an indicator of tariff exposure as treatment, an increase in support by the incumbent candidate is found as the exposure to tariff changes increases.
