abstract

  • Throughout all his work, Primo Levi was characterized by reflecting, based on his particular experiences in Auschwitz, what it is that is constitutive of human beings. In this writing, I propose to reinforce and theorize Levi`s view of the human as impure. To do this, I will start from Aristotle`s reflections on fortune and its relationship with morality and, later, delve into some implications of Bernard Williams` reflections on this same topic. Based on the aforementioned, I will present some particularities of Levi`s duty to understand in light of what Lisa Tessman said about the approach of moral dilemmas to deal with the experiences of those who have suffered moral damage in extreme situations such as life at the Lager; Above all, I will present a critique of his concept of moral failure due to the fact that he does not take into account the historicity of the victims` experience with respect to the recognition of the rupture and loss of meaning of their identity story. I believe that this intersection allows some peculiarities of the position of the Italian writer and chemist to stand out. All this will allow, above all, to see the hermeneutical horizon of Levi`s own testimonial work.
