abstract

  • Introduction: SARS-Cov-2 is a virus that has been declared as one of the main infectious diseases worldwide and engaging all the economic and social of a region on varying levels. Objective: The objective of this study is to present the epidemiological impact of COVID-19 in different Colombian populations registered in an occupational risk insurer, evaluating the prevalence of events previously classified as occupational disease in the economic sectors of Colombia as well as the incidence of mortality due to this pathology. Methodology: As a descriptive observational study, available information was collected from 39,608 cases assigned to an occupational risk insurer and with a diagnosis recognized as an occupational disease in a period from March 2020 to March 2021 in Colombia. The variables corresponded to type of case, gender, age, type of care, days of disability, department, economic activity, and mortality. The analysis was essentially univariate even when descriptions by groups were presented using absolute and relative frequencies. Results: In all the reported cases (n = 39,608), a prevalence of 0.95% was found for COVID-19 of the total number of insurer affiliates. Women presented the highest proportion (n = 26,496) with 66.9% of cases, regardless of their economic activity or age. Within the age range, it was found that 35.8 years was the average age of greatest affectation. It was observed that Bogotá and Antioquia represent 52.3% of the cases studied. Regarding the economic sectors, the highest frequency of cases was found in the health and social assistance sectors (71.02%), followed by cleaning services (7.24%) and temporary services sector (5.89%). The most frequent type of care was outpatient care (97.5%), followed by inpatient care (1.6%). It was found that the average number of days of disability due to COVID-19 was 6.87 days and the overall mortality of the cases was 0.29%. Discussion: The SARS-Cov-2 infection represents a great impact worldwide as a new occupational disease, significantly affecting multiple economic sectors in different countries. In comparison with similar studies in other countries, it was observed that Colombia shares similar data with a higher frequency in the health sector, in women, and in the age of higher productivity. The results of this study are intended to be useful for the development of control and mitigation plans in the spread of the virus in the different economic and labor sectors in Colombia.
