abstract

  • Epistaxis is acute bleeding from the nasal cavity, with local or systemic causes1. Worldwide, the prevalence is estimated at about 10% of the general population, more frequently in children under 10 years of age or adults over 60 years of age. There are treatment options from conservative medical to surgical to control nasal bleeding, with good bleeding control, however, to date there are no studies or medical centers in our country where epistaxis is managed with electrocautery in the office. Objective: To describe the characteristics of adult patients with epistaxis due to septal varices treated with electrocautery at Hospital Universitario Mayor Mederi, Bogotá, from August 2021 to May 2022. Methods: A descriptive cohort study was carried out with 123 patients who underwent bipolar electrocautery in visible septal varicose veins, in the emergency room. Results: Adults with associated history such as arterial hypertension in 58.5%, diabetes mellitus in 17.1%, renal failure 4.9%, chronic obstructive disease 10.6%. Previous treatment with oral antiaggregants in 26% and anticoagulants in 24.4%. Perception of mild or no pain in 93.4% during the procedure, with bleeding controls at 6 months of 96% without complications during the same follow-up period Conclusion: It was described how electrocautery can be performed in the office safely, at low cost and above all with a minimum pain threshold, adequate control of nasal bleeding and without associated complications
