The interest of this research is focused on analyzing the leading role that constitutional actions have acquired in the political participation of the LGBTI community in the pursuit of equal marriage approval in Colombia, after the promulgation of the 1991 Constitution, Therefore, the study presents a diagnosis of the shortcomings and limitations of both political representation and mechanismims of direct democracy, for meeting the demands of same-sex couples. Consequently, the research evidences how the under-representation of the interests of this community in the Congres, and the underutilization of the mechanismims of direct democracy caused by the deficiencies in its design and implementation, have prompted the LGBTI population and the rights activist to channel their political participation through the submission of constitutional actions.
