abstract

  • This research seeks to identify what factors explain the differences in gender gaps in labor market indicators in Bucaramanga, Pereira, Barranquilla, and Cartagena for the period 2008-2019. Bearing in mind that the labor market is one of the main sources of income inequality in Colombia and that the participation of women in it occurs in a differentiated way, we seek to analyze how the manifestations of the sexual division of labor ( DST) can help understand those variations and the sub-national differences between the four cities in question. For this, two mechanisms are proposed through which the DST operates: the concentration of women in paid and feminized care sectors, and the high burden of unpaid care work. These two DST mechanisms occur differently in the cities studied and explain to a certain extent the variation in the gender gap in labor market indicators.
