Thesis
This review article analyzes the population structure of patent applications and grants in Colombia, particularly in the relationship between firms and universities in the patenting process. The objective is to identify relevant characteristics and significative relationships between these two actors in the patent application and grant process. Through an investigation and analysis related to intellectual property and the firms’ situation in Colombia, the article pretends to offer a general view of patent settings and the level of innovation in the country. The first part of the article examines the relation between firms’ innovation and patents. This part of the review seeks to understand whether the patent activities of a firm can work as an indicator of its innovation performance. Then, the literature review centers on the patent and intellectual property Colombian context, specifically around firms. It explores how the patent system in Colombia has evolved through the years and which is its current status. The second part of the research corresponds to a review and analysis of the patents registered in Colombia by organizations, focusing on the associations between companies and universities, aiming to identify this collaboration network between the academic and business sectors in innovation and patenting in the country. This is followed by a segment interpreting the empirical analysis results according to the literature review. It is expected that this analysis provides valuable information for the relevant actors, allowing them to better understand the challenges and opportunities related to intellectual property protection in the Colombian business context. By identifying the difficulties that organizations face in the patent application and grant process, specific policies and strategies can be developed to promote innovation and intellectual property protection, contributing to a more dynamic and competitive environment in Colombia.
